My Top 5 favorite 90’s animes

My Top 5 favorite 90’s animes

There are only three countries I wanted to visit. Seriously, only three. Israel for religious reasons, Italy because I am a visual artist (for me going there is paying homage to the great masters of years past), and Japan because of Anime reasons (they say it’s also a great place to visit so why not?).

If you grew up in the 90’s, you have to love the various anime programs that cropped out during the decade. And for this post, I am posting the Top 5 of those programs which I loved.

My Favorite Top 5 90’s Anime

  1. Dragon Balltop favorite 90's anime - Dragon Ball

I practically grew up with Goku, the series’main protagonist. From childhood up to his disappearance in GT (I haven’t seen Super yet, maybe I’ve grown up a bit). I even tried emulating his speed (although right now I kind of regret it because it’s too embarrassing to remember). Man, Dragon Ball is the bomb! It’s  a shame that Hollywood still can’t do justice for this on the the big screen given the advances in technology and all.

Maybe it’s the weird hairdo’s? I don’t know, but Dragon Ball was the best ever in terms of entertainment value and great story line. Goku just doesn’t die, he lives forever. In our hearts.

2. Yu Yu Hakusho (aka Ghost Fighter)

For those of you living in this side of the world, who can ever forget the “Tapusin, Tapusin“(End it, End it) chant? Anyone who watched this anime uttered those words each time they watch Yusuke and  Toguro duke it out. We just love them.

The impressions, the attitude. Every guy tried to emulate at least one of the major characters. It’s funny to remember now how kids would form their hands into guns and shout “Ray Gun”while chasing their playmates into the roundabouts of the village. At least this is a training for our imagination, a form of escapism as a child.

3. Voltes V

I know, I know this is already a classic having been released 40-50 years ago? I just don’t know, but this was part of my formative years. In the 80’s they didn’t even let the show end, it just vanished. Come the 90’s, thanks to the popularity of its song in a gag show, if you know what I mean. If you don’t here it is:

It came back to relevance because of that show and we finally saw how the show ended at last. It’s great that the Armstrong brothers finally get to see their father, but all we care about was Jamie. Right? Right?

4. Gundam Wing

As if fascination with Voltes V robot wasn’t enough, this one captivated everyone and started the Gundam toy craze in the country. Many will try to deny it but the design of these robots is so great it compels you to buy one so you can touch one with your hands.

Its popularity is so immense that Japan has a statue of a Gundam in a park in Tokyo. See here.

This is one of the great what ifs in the history of anime. What if in the near future we can have and see a real Gundam in battle, it can be a reality because it can be done; and knowing how quirky and imaginative the Japanese can be, it’s only a matter of time before we can actually have one.

5. Slam Dunk

Basketball is undoubtedly the unofficial favorite sport in the Philippines. That being said, it is no wonder that this anime is a staple in every kid’s mind. Slam Dunk is a story of Hanamichi Sakuragi’s journey from being a prospect to a budding star of the sports. Its great storyline captures and burns the flame of competition for those fans who watched this program. It is undoubtedly, one of the best.

There are a lot more programs I wish to share but I think I cannot finish this article if I tackle it one by one. Maybe for another time. ‘Til then!

Marvel vs DC

Marvel vs DC

Tale as old as time, just as the Beauty and the Beast theme song says, that’s how long Marvel and DC have rivalled each other. From comics issues to today’s cinematic universe, it’s a raging war especially for both fans of both parties.

There are also times that they copy each other, especially their characters (I’d write about that in another post, sadly I can’t at the moment). But I’d like to point out some of the major differences between these titanic companies.

1. Location

We all know that Spiderman is from New York, so does the Avengers and their likes. Batman is from Gotham, Superman is from Metropolis. Get it? While Marvel tends to picture their heroes in real life locations, DC somewhat does it fictionally. Did I get that right? Now moving on…

2. Powers

Whilst, the X-men initially treats their powers as curse, Superman and the likes on the other hand on DC tends to treat theirs as blessings. They are given this and are called to embrace their powers and abilities.

3. How they got their powers

Superman’s power was inherent, as with Supergirl and Wonder Woman. Spiderman got his in a freak accident, so does Hulk. Captain America got his through some serum. DC tends to hold their hero born with their abilities or the ability to hone it at a young age. Marvel on the other hand made it look more grounded, more relatable since the heroes more usually get their powers in freak occurrences happening in their universe or immediate surroundings.
From my samples, there are some exceptions, but ultimately these are what I think the major differences between the two comic behemoths.

Dr Strange Easter Eggs

Dr Strange Easter Eggs

Every superhero movies (Both DC and Marvel) tend to leave Easter eggs in their movies. It is a treat for die-hard fans, although some who are not so familiar with the comics (like myself) tend to “huh?” when these scenes bust out because we totally have no idea what it is for.

In Batman v Superman for instance, one scene projects the Flash coming out of nowhere as if in Bruce Wayne’s dream. Now, for a non-DC reader it seems disorienting to have that shock (and I totally understand why the critics pan the movie out, sadly the public was swayed in the same opinion as BvS plummets in sales in the second week alone).

For this post I’d like to share some Easter eggs from the recently shown Marvel movie, Dr. Strange. For those who haven’t seen the movie yet I strongly advise that it is better you don’t watch the clip as it may ruin your viewing pleasure.

So did you miss anything? Special thanks to the Looper Youtube channel for those Easter eggs.

‘Til next time!

Real life super-hero

Real life super-hero

We talk about superheroes, like they are fantasies, their superhuman, strength, outworldly intelligence and so on and so forth. But, we forget that living among us are real life super heroes. And I am going to share one right now.
Meet Campbell Remess:
Campbell Remess Real Life Super Hero

Campbell Remess, Real Life Super hero

Though devoid of any super powers, this boy has been able to help others, kids who are in the hospital by bringing smiles in their faces. How does he do it? He brings them hand sewn stuffed animals.

The boy dubbed his project  “Project 365” and he’s made over 800 stuffed animals! Who taught him how to sew? No other than himself!

The story goes: When he was 9, Campbell asked his parents if he they can buy stuffed animals for the kids in the hospital. But as we all know this costs much, so he decided to make them himself. This kid has made it a mission to make stuffed animals out of his own hands to give to hospitals charities and other distribution points by Christmas to give to children, bed ridden because of different illnesses.

He made rattle balls at first, then taught himself how to make teddies.

Here he is distributing his gifts:

Spiderman: Homecoming Rumors

Zendaya – Rumors about Spiderman: Homecoming

After the commotion about Zendaya being casted, probably as MJ (I checked with IMDB now and it’s not Mary Jane Watson but Michele), another rumor is spreading that Zendaya may not be the preferred love interest of Peter Parker in the Spiderman Homecoming movie.

ComicBookCast2 (YouTube Channel)

Liz Allan, played by Laura Harrier, (Is this a mis-cast since in the comic Liz Allan is blonde?) is rumored to be Parker’s love interest in the movie. In the comics, she is Flash Thompson’s girlfriend (Flash is a  star high school football player who mercilessly bullies his high school classmate Peter Parker but greatly admires Spider-Man), she also somewhat bullies Peter but soon develops a crush on him when it was rumored that he IS Spider-man. By this time, however, Peter’s interest has waned considerably, as he notes that Liz never showed any real interest in him until he began dating Betty Brant, and assumes that Liz’s feelings are little more than a schoolgirl crush.

As the movie draws nearer its release, details are coming in smoothly. Spiderman: Homecoming is slated for July 2017, watch out for that.

Revan (my favorite character) will likely dominate Netflix series

Revan (my favorite character) will likely dominate Netflix series

This is hypothetical, should the Netflix petition succeed, then the rest of the planet will learn of my favorite Starwars hero, Revan. And this makes me excited.

Revan is both hero and villain in the Old Republic. A revered general who led the Jedi into action against the Mandalorian threat. Although within the Jedi order, the masters themselves, detest Revan for doing so, fearing a much larger threat was at work (which in the end proved to be true). Nonetheless the republic under attack was thankful for Revan’s heroic exploit, inactivity to him is nonesense because the republic will suffer if nobody does the dirty work.  Leading the Revanchist movement in defiance of the Jedi Council’s wishes, and taking on the name of Revan, the Knight donned the mask of a fallen Mandalorian as he joined the Republic Military’s fight and was appointed Supreme Commander.

After defeating the Mandalorian leader, Mandalore the ultimate, Revan with best friend and follower Alek, ventured into the Outer Rim of known space to find the greater threat. When they came back they were no longer Jedi knights but bonafide Sith Lords.

And this is what sets Darth-Revan apart from other entities in the Star Wars lore. He even has a book dedicated solely to him. Written solely for him by  Drew Karpyshyn.

The Synopsis goes:

Revan: hero, traitor, conqueror, villain, savior. A Jedi who left Coruscant to defeat Mandalorians and returned a disciple of the dark side, bent on destroying the Republic. The Jedi Council gave him his life back, but the price of redemption was high. His memories have been erased. All that’s left are nightmares and deep, abiding fear.

What exactly happened beyond the Outer Rim? Revan can’t quite remember, yet can’t entirely forget. Somehow he stumbled across a terrible secret that threatens the very existence of the Republic. With no idea what it is, or how to stop it, Revan may very well fail, for he’s never faced a more powerful and diabolic enemy. But only death can stop him from trying.

So, are you excited for Revan in Netflix as me?  Go sign this petition now!
